As a Democrat, I've expressed my concern with my own party in the past. This concern has heightened recently as it has been reported that Democrats are not united on health care. There are also a few other issues where the infighting within the Democratic Party is at minimum, counterproductive. But, as frustrated as I am, I thank God I am NOT a Republican! I am not talking policy; I am talking about the direction of the party and party leadership. What do I mean? The Democrats could be squeezing the political life out of the Republicans right now but choose to fight each other from within. This infighting is leaving gaping holes that could (and should, from a political perspective) be filled by Republican opposition. Continually, however, these Republicans do and say things that are so silly and ridiculous that they seem to be helping Democrats fill those holes plus reinforcing them with steel so they don't become holes again. Here are a few examples from just the last few days:
President's response to Iran: In a time when Iran is in a state of unrest, Republicans (only some of them) decided to use it as a political tool. Instead of focusing on the actual events, they choose to focus on the President's response as being weak. When you hear guys like McCain or Pence speak, they are saying the EXACT same things Obama does..that we should support the rights of the individuals to peacefully protest. But the President isn't doing enough? When asked what "enough" would be, they have absolutely no idea. Somehow, despite all the history involved, we should directly insert the US into the middle of it. Even members of their own party say that would be the worst thing we could do.
John Ensign affair: I don't think much need to be gone into, but, Ensign called for Clinton to quit after his 'scandal' and has always been one of the supposed "pillars" of family values. Can you say 'hypocrisy'?
Mark Sanford AWOL: Sanford was attempting to posture himself for the WH in 2012, but, he chooses the leave his state with it being unknown where he is (even to his wife). At best, it appears completely erratic behavior that you wouldn't expect from anyone from elected office. At worst, he could be hanging out with Ensign and Vitter on a 'retreat' (said in obvious jest). Either way it does very little to help his political career or the Republicans.
Absolutely NO NEW IDEAS: This is probably the most important aspect and has been consistent throughout the Obama Presidency. The Republicans have been very good at uniting against anything that is Obama, but, other than try to spread fear about what will possibly happen to the country as a result of Obama policies, they offer nothing in return. Why? For one, they can't use what they've used in the past (or at least not effectively) because they've been proven NOT to work. New ideas? Nothing..alternative budget was a joke and the recent health care proposal was as bad if not worse. It seems they're miscalculating the intelligence of voters. Other than the 25% that'd vote Republican regardless of who they'd have on the ticket, their tactics are appealing to nobody else.
Recent polls show the Obama numbers slipping a little bit, but, what's worse is the Republican numbers are at an all time low (less than 25% of the United States approves of the Republican party). You'd think they could be scoring political points by coming a bit to the middle showing that the 'iron first' ideas of the past do not represent the current party. The problem with that is, however, the iron fist policies DO represent the party's ideas. Most people see they now have a President that is willing to sit with them and try to get things done..but it seems they want no part of it. American people can see that. If that the way they want to play the game, politically as a Democrat I love it..the Dems just gotta sit back and watch the show..I guess somehow Republicans think they'll win the next election with 25% of the vote.
