Hey, how 'bout a no party system!
As a Democrat, obviously, I was tickled pink with the results of last November's election. For 8 years(even with a Democratic congress the last few years), I felt like my party was helpless with what we could do..I was waiting for that moment. On January 20th, I stood with many Americans, Democrat, Republican, and Independent alike proud that the United States of America had sworn into office our first African-American President. It is a moment I will never forget.
Now, reality has set in. Our nation is faced with issue after issue after issue that we should all be addressing together. What continues today is nothing like I was hoping for on January 20th. No, it has nothing to do with Obama because I do believe he is doing everything in his power to address the mountain of issues domestically and abroad and do so in our best interests. True, I haven't been crazy about every decision he has made, but, I have seen and understood his reason in every one and therefore accepted them. Overall, I think he has done an incredible job balancing everything.
I am extremely disappointed, however, that the entire political system continues to divide us as people, not bring us together. The "two party system" is a mode of divisiveness and is often the reason people don't listen to one another. That title of "Democrat" or "Republican" (or "Independent" as well) brings connotations with them that may be correct (or incorrect). I just finished writing a piece regarding the splintering of the Democratic Party and the problems it is causing. Republicans do a very good job of staying united but Democrats tend to feed on each other from within. I get frustrated because I feel to level the playing field, Democrats need to stay as united as the Republicans. But as I say that, I wonder are two polarized parties the best way to get things done on behalf of the people? What if there was no "Republican" or "Democrat"?
Imagine if all members of congress could share personal ideas without having to worry about repercussions from their own party. Imagine if all members of congress would listen to various ideas without predispositions. Imagine if members of congress could make decisions without repercussions from special interests. Regardless of party, I am quite sure there are no "stupid" people in government..just people with very different ideas. Imagine if everyone in congress approached the many situations we face with the same goals and pragmatism. It would be amazing what we could accomplish.
Now, back to reality..I suppose I'll be watching to see why Republicans are the party of "no and no ideas" and Obama and the Democrats are spending us into socialism.
