I remember back only a handful of years ago that anyone who spoke against the government and the efforts in Iraq were 'Un-American' and were often considered by some to be treasonous. War detractors were told that it is too important that we appear as a united country in the war on terror. In many ways, at least in the beginning, critics complied and kept their mouth shut.
Fast forward 6 or 7 years to 2009; we are in the midst of an enormous recession that could turn into a full blown depression, American business is folding and trying to stay afloat, American workers are seeing wages & health care coverage declining, we're still at war with Iraq and Afghanistan, North Korea is teetering on the brink (of sanity), there is a swine flu pandemic, a rise in domestic terrorism, the heart of the hurricane season is approaching, and so on. This is just to name of few of the issues facing the country (no, not just the Obama administration…everyone). Therefore, this could be a time when the people of our nation could come together and tackle these issues. It is safe to say that even as serious as things were 6 or 7 years ago, the sheer number and severity of issues now is drastically greater.
Using the same logic as was used 6 or 7 years ago, it should be viewed as 'Un-American' if you stand up and disagree with the President of the United States, but what is happening from the Republicans and Conservatives alike is much, much worse. Start with Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity etc. whose Anti-American rhetoric targets the White House and Obama on a daily basis. They aren't only disagreeing with Obama's policies, they often incite fear and call for "action"; leaving interpretation up to the next nut-job willing to pick up a gun. In addition to them, you have elected officials who call for a state to secede (Rick Perry of Texas), Congressional members repeatedly calling Obama a socialist or a fascist (too many to name here), or calling him "weak" because he actually talks to members of different countries, plus the latest is Congressman Mark Kirk who (while in China) stated to media that the budget numbers put forth by the Obama Administration "should not be trusted"……yes, this guy is a member of the UNITED STATES congress.
At what point does disagreement and rhetoric become treasonous? My fear is that any Obama policies will never even have a chance of working because of people purposely doing everything they can to assure they fail. The definition of treason is the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of a state to which the offender owes allegiance. 6 or 7 years ago we were told that is was un-American and treasonous to even disagree with the President of the United States and state it publicly. Now, these same people seem to think ANYTHING goes…not only from the media but from fellow members within the government, as well. Just imagine what could be done if we all worked together to solve some of these problems. Unfortunately now, it seems the system is becoming warped and counterproductive much like certain members of congress. These violating offenders of congress should be called out because they are not in position to serve the people, they are there to serve the interests of themselves or their party. To me, that is Anti-American.
